TF-CBT
Healing from Trauma with Evidence-Based Support
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a structured, evidence-based treatment model designed to help children, adolescents, and their caregivers recover from the impact of trauma. TF-CBT has been extensively researched and shown to reduce trauma-related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, guilt, and behavioral difficulties while strengthening the parent-child relationship.
What is TF-CBT?
TF-CBT is a short-term therapy (typically 12–20 sessions) that integrates trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive-behavioral, family, and humanistic principles. The model addresses both the child’s emotional and behavioral responses to trauma and supports caregivers in understanding and responding to their child’s needs.
The process includes gradual exposure to trauma-related memories and emotions in a safe and supportive setting, helping the child develop coping skills, correct unhelpful beliefs, and restore a sense of safety and control.
Who Can Benefit?
TF-CBT is appropriate for children and adolescents who have experienced:
Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
Neglect or exposure to domestic violence
Traumatic grief or loss
Community or school violence
Serious accidents, medical trauma, or other distressing events
What to Expect in TF-CBT
TF-CBT follows a structured yet flexible framework often referred to by the acronym PRACTICE, which includes:
P – Psychoeducation about trauma and its effects
R – Relaxation and self-regulation skills
A – Affective expression and emotional processing
C – Cognitive coping and restructuring
T – Trauma narrative and processing
I – In vivo exposure (if needed)
C – Conjoint sessions with the caregiver
E – Enhancing safety and future development
Throughout this process, the therapist supports both the child and caregiver in building trust, communication, and confidence in handling emotions and memories connected to trauma.
TF-CBT Provided Virtually
Clients must be age- and developmentally appropriate to participate effectively in TF-CBT sessions conducted virtually.
I have received training through the National Children’s Alliance in implementing TF-CBT via telehealth, ensuring that the virtual process remains engaging, effective, and trauma-informed.
The Goal of TF-CBT
The ultimate goal of TF-CBT is to help children and families heal from trauma by:
Reducing trauma-related emotional and behavioral symptoms
Improving coping and problem-solving skills
Rebuilding trust and connection in relationships
Increasing resilience and sense of safety
Every step of the process is approached with sensitivity, warmth, and respect for the child’s pace and comfort.
